From: a copy of an 1863 Confederate Receipt Book." Nelson
  • 1 quart flour
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • warm water
  1. Mix cream of tartar with flour
  2. cut in shortening and salt
  3. dissolve soda in enough warm water to make a dough to be rolled and cut into biscuits.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees for about 12 minutes or until browned on top.
