Old Fashioned Butterscotch Tassies

My Aunt's Recipe
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups sifted flour 1/2 teaspoon Cream of Tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Soda
  1. Place shortening, vanilla extract, brown sugar and egg in mixing bowl.
  2. Best thoroughly.
  3. Then sift together flour, soda, cream of tartar, salt.
  4. Add 1/2 of the flour mixture to the first mixture and mix well.
  5. Add the remaining half and beat thoroughly again.
  6. If mixture is too firm, add milk by the Tablespoon to reach desired working consistency.(Remember this is a pioneer recipe)
  7. Pack the dough VERY firmly with the hands into several long shape bars about 2 x 2 inch square.
  8. Wrap in wax paper or dampened cloth and chill in the refrigerator.
  9. Cut in thin slices, about 1/4 thick;
  10. place on greased baking sheet and bake in a hot oven (350 degrees F) for 6 to 7 minutes.

    Makes 60 cookies (TASSIES).
